Project SEO: How to Get FREE Backlinks with Right Keywords
One my way to work today, I got an idea and I thought I would put that into test by making a test project. Let me give you guys a little background.
I assume that we all know the followings:
- Backlinks are very important for my/your /any blog
- Multiple backlinks with right keywords will get any blog ranked higher in searched (google mainly)
- We have a lot of bloggers here who appreciate good blog posts and would like to know about it
- Life is a zero sum game; we all need to give a little to get a little
So, I decided to have a weekly post with the following:
- I will choose one blog from the list of blogs that I read often or that you suggest
- I will communicate with that blogger with my intentions explaining my plan of postings somewhere between 5-7 links pointing his/her blog posts that I have enjoyed reading.
- I will also request to do the same for my blog
- I know that high PR is important but we always have to work your way up. So, I will start reviewing blogs those just started but have quality contents and best of all they will appreciate that single link more then bigger bloggers.
Things that I am looking from this project:
- I wanted to meet other bloggers and hopefully be friends.
Generate powerful backlinks by pointing out what I like the most about your blog (in your case, what you liked the most about mine or others). - Create a systematic way to generate a dedicated # of backlinks and reviews every month. This process should take away my/your constant thinking of generating backlinks.
- I am value concision (as others say -”cheap”), so even though I can afford, I wanted to save some money by generating some FREE backlinks offering what I have on hand for FREE as well.
Things that you can do to be a make this plan a success and to enjoy its benefits:
- Post your blog link in your comment and so that I (along with others) can review it. You can also pm/email me a list of blogs posts that you think are better ones.
- Choose other blogs related to your niche and communicate with those blogger explaining your intension (may be you can also point out to this blog).
- Start following this process to generate backlinks for your blog.
- Review my idea at your blog to generate some support for this idea of FREE backlink generation through reviewing other blogs.
I will be posting updates as i move forward with this project.
Press Release Writing Checklist: From Brainstorming till Distributing
I have posted last week a list of 35 FREE PR distributing websites that anyone can use to publish his/her press releases. And as a follow up today I will introduce a simple process of writing a press release using a press release writing checklist. There could be hundreds of little things that could be in you Press Release checklist but the following is a great generalized checklist that you should use to check you Press Release after you have written it and before you publish it. This guide or check list of writing en effective press release will walk you through from the very beginning (forming ideas) till the end (distributing) of you press release.
Brainstorm Before You Write:
- What is the purpose of the release?
- What are the main messages? Is it specific to a product or general enough for bunch of products?
- Who is the targeted audience? Think like a marketing guru?
- Where does my message need to go?
- Can you combine product announcement and human interest to broaden its appeal?
Optimize Your Press Release Headline:
- Your Headline should (i) Contain a single point (ii) Be factual and free of hype
- Use the active voice and the present tense.
- Use keywords related to your press release
- Target length = 8 -10 words – try to fit it all on one single line
Write the Press Release: Opening paragraph
- The Opening paragraph should follows the conventional newspaper approach, summarizing the story’s who, what, why, when, where (and often how).
- The Opening paragraph should contain the key message of the release and take only 30 seconds to read aloud.
- Avoid background material – save that for boilerplates and editors’ notes.
- The lead should have a length = 25 words
Write the Press Release: Body
- Keep it conversational using layman’s terms.
- Make sure it’s precisely related to your headline.
- Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs (average 42 words).
- Avoid passive sentences wherever possible.
- Use the strong language of verbs and nouns and steer away from fluffy adjectives.
- Spell out acronyms, translate buzz words and local insider usage – push detailed explanations to editors’ notes.
- Break up text into bullets or sub headings when possible – this will make it more palatable to the reader.
- Use keywords and keyword phrases multiple times throughout the release.
Write the Press Release: Quotations
- Close out with a bang. Make short memorable bytes not a series of runaway sentences.
- Offer the name & title of the spokesperson once – thereafter use the surname only, avoiding use of Dr, Mr, Ms.
Write the Press Release: Distribution
- Different items will appeal to different segments of the press and public, so choose the media outlet and (the department within that outlet) carefully and make sure the release matches their needs.
- Use the FREE Press release Distribution sites before you start paying for your press release.
I also wanted to thank Beyond Pesticides guys to help me out writing this press release writing checklist.

Search Engine Ranking: Use XML Sitemap for Better Google Indexing
Today I will talk a little more about search engine ranking. Before any search engine ranks your web site or blog pages, they need to know what your website has to offer them. And your website and/or blog sitemap will inform search engines about all the pages that are available for crawling, which brings out my today’s blog post topic “Sitemap for Your Blog” and I will break down this post by the following format:
- Definition of Sitemap
- Types of Sitemap
- Importance of Sitemaps
- Creating a sitemap for my blog
What is a Website Sitemap?
By definition, a sitemap is an XML file that lists all the URLS for any site along with some additional metadata ( how often the list changes, last times you website was updated etc) about each of those URLs, so that search engines bots are rank your webs pages accordingly.
What is the mportance of Sitemap?
Web crawlers (search software created by search engines) usually discover pages from links within your website and from other websites. Sitemaps supplement all those links to allow web crawlers (that support Sitemaps) to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site. Let’s take a look what Google says about Sitemaps. Sitemaps are particularly helpful if:
- Your site has dynamic content.
- Your site has pages that aren’t easily discovered by Googlebot during the crawl process – for example, pages featuring rich AJAX or Flash.
- Your site is new and has few links to it. (Googlebot crawls the web by following links from one page to another, so if your site isn’t well linked, it may be hard for us to discover it.)
- Your site has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other, or are not linked at all.
You can also use a Sitemap to provide Google with additional information about your pages, including:
- How often the pages on your site change. For example, you might update your product page daily, but update your About Me page only once every few months.
- The date each page was last modified.
- The relative importance of pages on your site. For example, your home page might have a relative importance of 1.0, category pages have an importance of 0.8, and individual blog entries or product pages have an importance of 0.5. This priority only indicates the importance of a particular URL relative to other URLs on your site, and doesn’t impact the ranking of your pages in search results.
- Sitemaps provide additional information about your site to Google, complementing our normal methods of crawling the web. We expect they will help us crawl more of your site and in a more timely fashion, but we can’t guarantee that URLs from your Sitemap will be added to the Google index. Sites are never penalized for submitting Sitemaps.
What types of Sitemaps are Available for my Website and/or Blog?
There are two types of sitemap that you can use for you blog. They are
- HTML Sitemaps, which is a page that lists all the all the available web pages of your website and/or blog broken down by sections to help users find the information they need.
- XML Sitemaps, which is also called Sitemaps, with a capital ‘S’. This is another way and customized way to inform Google about your website’s and/or blogs available pages to crawl. And this is also the type of Sitemap that we’ll be discussing in this article.
How to Choos the right Sitemap format for my Blog?
My theory is that “to be the best, you got the hang out with the best, abiding by their rules”. Google already proved to be the best search engine on the web by gaining the highest online search market share. Keeping that in mind, we will design our sitemap for Google. And XML Sitemap is what Google is asking for.
How can I create a sitemap for my blog?
By now we know, what sitemap, importance of sitemap and what type of sitemap to use for your blog. So, its action time. You have three options at this moment.
- If you have an xml Google sitemap then it’s great and thanks for reading this post.
- If you have a sitemap for your blog which is not in XML format then you need to add an XML formatted sitemap for Google.
- If you don’t have any then you also need to add XML formatted sitemap for you blog
You can create a XML sitemap for your website in ext 5 minutes following the steps below:
- Step 1:
Go to wordpress.com/extend/plugins and download the Google XML Sitemaps Wordpress plugin. Why this particular one , because it has the least compatibility issues with other plugins and to back is up , Google XML Sitemaps has the highest downloading number, almost 1M times. - Step 2:
Upload this Zip-Archived file into your wp-content/plugins/ directory and extract all files. Then go into your Wordpress administration page, click on Plugins and activate it. After that you will have a new menu point called “Sitemap” under the “Options” menu. You can alter the default change frequencies, filename and other options there. Click once on “Rebuild Sitemap” to create your sitemap the first time.
Wow, finally you have done it and you have made your blog ready to rock and for that you got googlebot to dance with you using XML sitemaps for your blog. By the way, just in case you wanted to know how I knew all of the above then the answer will be I am nerd enough to spend some time reading Goggle webmaster tool, Sitemap.org and Wp Plugins page. Also, since you have read my post you a nerd as well but in a smaller scale. Enjoy your rest of the day.
