Monthly Visitors for Top 10 Social Media Websites
I have posted yesterday about the top 10 social media websites in the US. Thanks to all of you who twitted it. While i was looking at the ranking, I was trying to look beyond the ranking. Some of the questions came to me were the followings:
- How many US visitors do those top ranked social media websites get?
- How can I interpret that top 10 social media websites list into something that I can use from marketing standpoint?
While I was looking for those answers, I know the following:
- As per Compete.com, last April Twitter had 19.4 million visitors from all over the world.
- As per Alexa.com Twitter gets 46.3% of its traffic from the USA.
Assuming both compete, hitwise and alexa numbers are correct, we can say that 1.21% of US market share will have around 9.12 million visitors (46.3% of 19.4 Million visitors) form US. This made the rest much easier. I used this information and I have calculated the visitors/month for the rest of the websites. Take a look and feel free to comment.

Interesting data. I think that the one thing that you are missing is number of page views per month and per user therefore showing engagement with the different websites.
According to TechCrunch:
[MySpace has] seen a 16% year over year drop in page views, from 41.6 billion to 34.8 billion (Comscore, April March 2009). Facebook has grown from 13 billion to 20 billion page views per month in that period.
The number of visitors and percentage of US market is helpful, but understanding the level of activity for the registered users is critical in determining value for marketing.
Thanks for the post! People are crazy for not using more Twitter.
